The idea




July 15
Now that I am almost done with America III, I started working on the next piece of the same series: It shall represent amrican arts.
Immediately I decided for Ray Charles, Orson Wells and Mark Rothko. On the sketch at left I also put Hemingway, but I am not very convinced it should be there, except that he is good looking for a portrait.
I wanted some architecture and chose the Golden Gate bridge which should face an American Indian totem.

What about George Gershwin?
Last night I was in the piazza in Siena for a Gershwin concert, and it came to my mind that he deserves to be in the picture. Particularly since I found this good portrait on the internet.

I also found another of Orson Wells, older, but very good too.




 
Execution

July 30
Changed my mind about the jazz musician and chose Charlie Parker . Ray Charles would make a better picture and he has become a myth since his recent death. But 'Bird' is, to me, immensely more important.

Chose a wood panel 85x110, horizontal instead of vertical. Charlie Parker at the center with Faulkner and Rothko left, and Gerschwin and Wells at right. Made copies of each photo to choose the appropriate scale.
Sept. 26
Took me almost a month to decide to start painting. It often happens that I delay working on a piece, particularly when it comes to painting after sketching. I have a sort of fear, like actors do before a theater play.
This afternoon I finally started and at 2 after midnight I was there, happy and confident about the piece.
From now on it should go fats. But who knows?

Picture at right - maybe finished. I have to look at it for a few days before putting the signature on it.

Oct. 8
Well! I made a few changes. The sky top left was made clearer like dawn. Improved the left hand of Charlie Parker.
Completed the white stripes at bottom right. Also work on the saxophone and the Totem - plus a few more small stars on top in the dark sky.
