The idea

July 22
My grand-son, Federico (5 years) visits me almost everyday in my studio, and we do things together. On that day I wanted to start on something not too difficult for him to work with. So I said: "Let's make a fish!"
And we started to shape a fish with Styrofoam and papier-mâché.....

And I got hooked!

Execution

I went to buy a few 100s of those small aluminium rings which are used to block screws and prevent damaging the wood or metal on which it is screwed (I think the technical name in English is 'washer'). They are 8mm diameter. I showed Federico how to place them half on top of each other after applying a layer of tiling cement.

We planted cut forks in the middle of the back and glued large serving forks (with handle sawed) for the gills and the tail.
The eyes are on dentist transparent resin.
It is 29cm long, 14 high and about 6 cm dick.

We liked our fish and I thought of giving him a nice presentation piece.
I cut some plastic plates (8mm thick, about 25 cm long and 3 to 8cm high) in the shape of waves.
I assembled a wood box (35x25, h:12cm) with a plastic transparent top glazed in deep blue colour.

We placed the plastic waves on top of the transparent plate and glued them in place. Finally I put an electric tube inside the box, whose light diffracts on the edges of the waves.

Federico is very happy with his fish. And so am I.

His brother, Filippo (15 months) , fell in love with the fish too. So it created some problems. The fish is really Federico's!

I should make a smaller fish for Filippo to play with.

Maybe the box with the plastic waves is a bit kitchy.
I decided to make a different support with simple metal sticks planted on a wood base.
