Under Piazza del Campo and on the back side of the Palazzo, there is the Piazza del Mercato, which is very different but no less amazingly beautiful. It is closed by the huge Palazzo (almost twice as high on that side because of the steep slope which it closes) on the north side and opens up toward the valley and the country side on the south side, with the beautiful church Dei Servi on a small hill to the left. Here again you enter Piazza del Mercato from tunnel streets and even from a real tunnel through the houses followed by a down staircase.

For some time I wanted to paint that impression of mixed closeness and openness.

I took lots of photos and started to cut and assemble them with a computer application. They are shown below - click them to enlarge.
I shall start with the center view.
