: "Escher fountain " project for a garden fountain

The idea

I was always fascinated by Escher's works. I found him a boring artist but an outstanding intellectual. I always felt that it could be aesthetically improved to result in more pleasing pictures.

The image at left is known, I think, as "Water Falls".

Could it be realized in 3 dimensions?

That was my questions.

I already made a wooden construction in honor of Escher

At left was my first sketch of a possible design. At right, an extension of the design.

Execution

I chose to build the simpler configuration of cascades and tunnels, one of each - giving a construction in the shape of an 'eight'.

I first made a small plywood model of about 50x50 cm. Being in wood, it could not be tested with water in the river bed. But it confirmed that the illusion would work and that I should make a stone model that could hold water.

Click the sketch to see it enlarged with the description narrative.

This wood model was subsequently lost or destroyed or desintegrated after I had made the stone model.

At far right is a view of the final stone model from the top.
The river bed is coloured in blue, but no water in it yet.

The model above is 50x50 overall. It requires an observation point at about 50 cm and at 50cm height.

Think of a garden fountain about 3m by 3m - that would require an observation point 3m high. Therefore it could only be achieved by building a small observation platform with an access staircase at about 3m from the fountain itself. So the whole could give an interesting piece of garden architectural sculpture.

Alternatively the platform could be replaced by an elevated, natural or man-made, plateau in a garden presenting different levels.

As indicated before, the top of the platform or plateau should be furnished with a sort of vertical stone, presenting a small opening at the right place, through which the spectator could contemplate with the maximum illusion effect.

I made a basic sketch of a fountain which would be almost 20m long and 10 wide with an observation point 3m high.
Take a look at it.

An even crazier idea would be to landscape the all thing with dimensions in the 50 meters range! May be placing the observation point closer to the fountain in order to require less than 50m altitude.
