Pupitre de lecture en position allongée
Leggio per posizione sdraiata
After my
first construction of a bookstand
for reading in bed, armchair or couch, I worked on several improvements.

The
rounded base supports allow an easily adjustable rotation so as
to get the optimum inclination for reading comfort.

Bookstand
to read in bed or on a deep sofa
Pupitre de lecture en position allongée
Leggio per posizione sdraiata
I
wanted a bookstand for reading in bed or armchair or couch. After
constructing a rough the first model I tried it in bed and armchair.
In both cases the thing was resting uncomfortably on my belly.
I realized that the supports should be much higher than I initially
thought. If you click on the small icon under the image at far
left you can see the measures that are required for effective
comfort. For a normal non obese adult, the lowest part of the
inclined reading plane must be at least 22cm above floor level.
I also realized that the inclination of the reading plane should
be adjustable. Therefore I added the rotating side flaps, adjustable
with the brass knobs. They can be set in 5 positions, 2 for higher
and 2 for lower inclination. The photos here show them in the
first mor reclined position.
On top I placed a narrow horizontal table that can be used to
place pencils, cups and other small objects.

The
3 bookstands here left and under are entirely made on wood prepared,
worked up, decorated, cut and varnished so as to look like wood
inlays. The second bookstand below is also decorated with old
ceramic tiles which are also faked. Actually the central piece
(central image below) is made of only one wood panel. The tiles
are made on this panel by covering their surface with a thin layer
of plaster, varnish, colour and final varnishing. The cracks and
defects (not visible in the photos) are added with various small
tools.

The
3 bookstands have the same design and dimensions, except for slight
differences in the horizontal shelf.
