Development of the idea - Structure
In addition to the statue “held together” by the red stripes I wanted to reuse the idea of packing stars (white, black, yellow, brown, Jewish) moving in from the outside in the blue background of the upper-left corner of the banner, like I had done with “The Melting Pot” picture.
Then I wanted to surround the statue with four elements symbolizing much of America:
- The agricultural hard working society
- The major artistic innovation of Jazz
- The unconventional approach to traditional arts
- The high-tech world
After searching for a while for striking images of these eminently US characters I chose the following representations:
- The famous “American Gothic” picture by Grant Wood (1930)
- A portrait of Miles Davis
- The “Big Torn Campbell’s Soup by Andy Warhol (1930)
- A mixture of Intel, Microsoft and molecular biology

I would later decide where to put the Intel Inside logo depending on the aesthetic requirements and would do the same for the Microsoft Windows trade symbol.
As for molecular biology I wanted to decide later where to insert some DNA double spiral.

As I was later working on the execution I felt that one typical element was missing and should represent the consumer society— I then chose the Mc Donald double yellow arches.
