Development of the idea - Execution

The size should be reasonably large — I chose 110 x 87 cm.
The support should be wood panel as I was now very familiar with (and this choice turned out to be providential to solve the problem of the title of the painting).
I would use only sponges and spatulas —no brushes— to execute the painting because it gives more strength and depth to the work and prevents me to get lost in too much detailing. (I actually used a small brush only twice: to write the Intel Inside logo and the Campbell’s Soup lettering.)

First I sketched the statue on the prepared wood panel to decide its size and position. Since it looks to the right it should be placed slightly left of the center. Its height being the dominant dimension it should leave a fairly large space below so as to place the other larger elements like Grant Wood, Andy Warhol and Miles Davis.

Once the sketch done to satisfaction I copied it on a sheet of paper and cut it into 5 pieces to represent the cracks and then taped the pieces in the positions which I felt would best show that the statue had suffered some cracks.

This final sketch was reproduced on the wood panel and the statue painted with dark greenish shadings.
It is at that point that I decided the movement of the stars flying in from an opening in the sky at the upper-left corner
I then started to paint the red stripes of the banner but was not sure on how to give the desired effect.
