I decided to carve a very rough model of the statue from a block of Styrofoam and then observe the folds of a banner wrapped around. But the attempt was inconclusive and after trying some other sketching I decided that the best way was simply to follow exactly the relief of the statue with its folding and cracking and use the shadow effect reproduced on the red and white stripes.
